Community Project
Helping Refugees – The Community Project in the Emerald Learning Zone is work with local charities to support their work with refugees. The children develop their understanding of what it means to be a refugee or seek asylum and come up with different ways we can offer our support to people who come to the North East as refugees.
Superpowers in Action!
The Blitz Poetry – During War Week the children were tasked with learning about The Blitz and responding with poetry. The children were then asked to read their poems out to the class and record them for an Exhibition attended by parents. The children showed amazing courage and resilience when reading out their poems and were proud when they saw the reactions from our visitors.
Parliament Week – The children from the Diamond and Emerald Learning Zones took part in Parliament week. One of our sessions was to hold a Q&A with our local MP Richard Holden. The children did not hold back in their questions regarding climate change, racism and homophobia, the cost of living crisis and support for Weardale. The children showed great courage in asking their questions and I think we have some MP’s in the making!
Attendance Award – The Emerald Learning Zone chose their treat for getting the highest attendance in the Autumn Term. We had pizza, hot chocolate and a movie afternoon. The children came to school in their comfy clothes and we used blankets and pillows to snuggle up and watch a film.

Superpowers in Action!
West End Refugee Service Visit – We were very lucky to welcome Abi and Jess from the West End Refugee Service into school on Monday 7th March. We attended a whole school assembly where we learning about the journey of asylum seeker Ali on her journey from Chile. Jess then told us all about the culture in her home country of Chile and the children were able to make their very own Zampoñas. We hope to continue our work with WERS and look forward to welcoming them back to our school soon!
Working with Kema – We have been so lucky to work with an amazing rap artist called Kema. The children worked with Kema to write and perform two rap songs based on the similarities and differences between people. We had a great time and look forward to, hopefully, working with Kema again!
Weardale Adventure Centre – The Emerald Learning zone visited Weardale Adventure centre to work on their superpower of Courage. They took part in Rock Climbing and Canoeing. Many of the children were nervous when taking on the change of rock climbing but they all gave it a go and everyone managed to get further up the wall than anticipated. During Canoeing, the children were asked to take part in challenges using team work to succeed. They really enjoyed this and many took a dip in the river at the end. Overall, everyone had a fantastic time. Riley said ‘ I had the best day, I loved rock climbing.’
Our Community Project
Our community project focus is on refugees in the North East. We will be looking at how many refugees come to our area and the different type of support they need. We will be working closely with the West End Refugee Service to help to educate our children and local community about to support and welcome refugees and asylum seekers into the North East.
Drake’s the Book Shop visit
We welcomed Richard from Drake’s book shop to bring us a box of brand-new books for our Library. The children were very excited to get their hands on the new books and they were all gone by the end of second play time!
Richard also did some work with the Emerald and Ruby class about Refugees as it is National Refugee Week this week. We looked at the book called The Day War Came. This generated amazing discussions with the children about what it might be like to be a Refugee and their experiences moving to a new country. The children then made their own giant chair, which is a reference from the story. It was a fantastic session and we look forward to welcoming Richard back to school again in the future.
